Stronger Families. Stronger Communities. Stronger Washington

KOMO News’ Eric Johnson followed up his documentary “Seattle is Dying” with a documentary called Fighting for the Soul of Seattle. The documentary, which first aired on KOMO News on December 12th, is an 1.5 hour program that explores drug addiction, mental health, homelessness, criminal justice system, and the failed policies of the Seattle City Council.

According to Eric Johnson, “The Fight for the Soul of Seattle” documents the heartbreaking condition of people on the streets, and the crushing decisions Seattle entrepreneurs are forced to contemplate as their life savings and dreams are destroyed by theft, vandalism and a dwindling customer base. This documentary also explores potential bold solutions to treat those living on the streets and pair them with agencies and assistance that can provide a clear path away from the endless circle of addiction and crime.

It is heartbreaking to watch the City of Seattle deteriorate under failed policies that prioritize politics over people. A main theme of the documentary was that housing without services and services without accountability have failed the most vulnerable in our community. The cycle of addiction and mental illness is perpetuated by the destructive influence of politics on law enforcement and the criminal justice system.

Unfortunately, these policies are moving to Olympia in the State Legislature and into our communities. This documentary, like “Seattle is Dying”, is a must see; especially the segment about my friend State Rep. Andrew Barkis and his son. I am proud that Eric Johnson and KOMO aired this documentary.
