Rep. Peter Abbarno, R-Centralia, pre-filed legislation creating employer tax incentives for the support of veterans and military families.
House Bill 1016 would create and expand a program that sunset in 2022.
“Helping military families and local businesses should be a top priority during the 2025 session,” said Abbarno, House Republican Caucus Chair. “Veterans and their families have already given so much to our community. This incentive will help provide financial security and fill much-needed workforce positions with highly qualified individuals.”
The Legislature established the tax credits in 2015 with the passage of Senate Bill 6057. In 2020, the Joint Legislative Audit and Review Committee (JLARC) performed a review of the two tax credits and recommended the Legislature modify the preferences to better serve unemployed veterans. Based on the committee’s recommendations, Abbarno’s legislation extends the program, doubles the benefit, and expands benefits to military families.
According to the Department of Labor, the unemployment rate for veterans in Washington state outpaces the national average. At the same time, the Tax Foundation found Washington to be 45th in terms of competitive tax advantage. Abbarno argues HB 1016 helps address both issues.
