Law Day 2022 is celebrated on May 1st and recognized throughout the Month of May.
The 2022 Law Day theme is “Toward a More Perfect Union: The Constitution in Times of Change.” It is a time to reflect on, and read again, the United States Constitution, Washington State Constitution, and consider the words and intent found woven into these documents. Is it static? Is it dynamic?
President Dwight D. Eisenhower established Law Day in 1958 to celebrate the rule of law in a free society. President Eisenhower, a former five-star Army general during World War II, saw first-hand what happens when the rule of law breaks down. As the Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force, he directed multi-lateral military operations on land, sea, and air in Europe.
Whether you’re a lawyer, attorney general, paralegal, defendant or plaintiff, or just someone using a legal contract, the law affects and protects us all. As a state legislator, Law Day is not only a time for me to reflect on the law as it is written, but whether it is being applied as intended and whether it is working as intended.
