For years, state Rep. Peter Abbarno has proudly supported Special Olympics athletes and families throughout Lewis County and across Washington state. Whether participating in the Law Enforcement Torch Run, jumping into freezing water during the annual Polar Plunge, attending competitions, or advocating in Olympia, Abbarno says Special Olympics represents the very best of community, inclusion, perseverance, and inspiration.
“Special Olympics is about much more than sports,” Abbarno said. “It is about dignity, opportunity, friendship, and empowering people of all abilities to achieve incredible things. Every athlete inspires us with their determination, joy, and courage.”
Abbarno has been an active supporter of the Lewis County Special Olympics program for many years, regularly participating in community fundraising events benefiting local athletes. One of the most visible events is the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run, where law enforcement officers, community leaders, athletes, and volunteers carry the “Flame of Hope” through Lewis County to raise awareness and support for Special Olympics Washington. Abbarno has participated alongside local law enforcement agencies, athletes, and volunteers to help spotlight the importance of inclusion and community support for individuals with intellectual disabilities.
Another major annual fundraiser is the Polar Plunge, where participants brave icy waters to raise money for Special Olympics programs. Abbarno has repeatedly taken the plunge with the Lewis County “Icicle Brigade,” helping raise thousands of dollars for local athletes and statewide programming. The event brings together law enforcement officers, families, businesses, students, and community members in support of Special Olympics Washington and its mission.
In Olympia, Abbarno expanded his advocacy beyond community events by sponsoring House Resolution 4631 during the 2025 legislative session, recognizing the 50th anniversary of Special Olympics Washington. The bipartisan resolution honored five decades of empowering athletes, promoting inclusion, and strengthening communities throughout Washington state. The resolution was officially adopted by the Washington State House of Representatives on March 25, 2025.
During the resolution ceremony at the Capitol, athletes, coaches, families, and Special Olympics Washington representatives joined lawmakers in celebrating the organization’s legacy and impact. Abbarno praised the athletes for serving as role models of perseverance and sportsmanship while emphasizing the importance of creating opportunities for everyone to participate and succeed.
“Special Olympics athletes remind us that barriers can be overcome and that every person deserves the opportunity to compete, belong, and thrive,” Abbarno said during remarks supporting the resolution.
Since its founding in 1975, Special Olympics Washington has served more than 12,000 athletes through year-round sports training, competitions, health programs, and leadership opportunities. The organization has become a powerful force for inclusion and acceptance in schools and communities across the state.
Abbarno says his support for Special Olympics reflects a broader belief that strong communities are built through compassion, volunteerism, and inclusion.
“Lewis County has always stepped up to support Special Olympics athletes and families,” Abbarno said. “I am honored to stand with these incredible athletes and help ensure Special Olympics Washington continues changing lives for generations to come.”
