In the Chronicle: Washington state Rep. Peter Abbarno, R-Chehalis, recently spent the day at Centralia High School connecting with students and educators about career pathways, higher education and the growing need for professionals in education and early learning, according to a news release from the 20th Legislative District lawmaker.
Hosted by teacher Danette Jones, Abbarno visited multiple classes and engaged with students across a range of programs from freshman career exploration courses to early childhood education classes and the school’s innovative Teachers Academy.
The Teachers Academy provides students interested in education careers with hands-on learning experiences, including opportunities to work with younger students and explore the teaching profession in real-world settings, the news release stated.
“It was a privilege to spend time with such motivated and thoughtful students at Centralia High School,” said Abbarno, who serves as House Republican Caucus chair. “Danette is doing incredible work. Programs like the Teachers Academy are helping students gain real-world experience while building the skills they need to succeed in college, careers and life.”
Jones, who coordinated the visit, emphasized the importance of connecting students with community leaders.
“Having Representative Abbarno in the classroom gives students a real-world perspective on careers, civic engagement and leadership. It helps them see what’s possible beyond high school,” she said in the news release.
During his visit, Abbarno also shared insights from his own educational and professional journey, answered student questions about public service and encouraged students to pursue careers aligned with their passions, especially in high-demand fields like teaching and early childhood education, the release stated,
“Abbarno has been a consistent advocate for education and workforce development, supporting policies that expand opportunities for students, families and educators across Washington,” the news release stated. “His visit highlights a continued commitment to strengthening career-connected learning opportunities in Southwest Washington.”
